What to expect when flying in for Super Bowl XLV!
Whether you have already booked your charter flight into the Dallas area for this Sunday’s Super Bowl XLV or are still shopping for that last minute charter, there are many things to consider. Due to the high volume of people coming into the Dallas area, Super Bowl Sunday will certainly not be like any other trip into or out of Dallas on a regular weekend.
Sunday the 6th from 3:30pm CST to 11:59pm CST all airports within a 10 mile radius of the Cowboys Stadium will be closed. This includes Dallas/Ft. Worth International (DFW), Arlington Municipal (GKY) and Grand Prairie Municipal (GPM). No aircraft will be allowed to land or depart from these airports. Dallas Love Field (DAL) and Addison (ADS) are probably your best bet for flying in on Super Bowl Sunday.
Regardless of your team, flying in for Super Bowl Sunday has a theme; to plan ahead and bring lots of patience. Though Dallas Love Field and Addison will be accessible, be prepared for ground and air traffic delays. 3 or 4 hour arrival and departure delays are not uncommon. Build in a buffer so these inevitable delays do not affect your plans.
Availability of ground transportation is already very tight, so book your ride from the airport to the game and back in advance. If you like to order catering for your charter flights, get that order in right away. The catering companies will be extremely busy as they will be servicing many more clients than usual.
If you have not booked your charter yet, and are planning on flying in and out on the same day, be aware crew duty limitations. The FAA mandates pilot duty not to exceed a maximum of 14 hours. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to fly in from anywhere, attend the game, and depart within this limitation. Be sure to double check with your charter broker or operator to ensure that duty limitations will not impact your itinerary.
Good communication with your charter professional is important. If you haven’t booked yet and are looking for a last minute flight, there are still options for flying into Dallas for the game. At this point in time, however, be sure only to book with an operator or broker with extensive experience as it pertains to flying in to special events like the Super Bowl.
